Good Morning Worth County

Good morning everyone, I honestly hope you all had a wonderful Christmas day with family & friends. My day was quiet at first, me & my Golden Retrievers eating goodies/snacks watching tv & relaxing haha…Then i got a visitor, a young lady whom I have watched grow from a very little skinny girl into a beautiful young lady complaining that she’s fat (size 4) lol. We decided to ride to Tifton & eat some King Buffet food and it was really good. Great conversation discussing her plans for starting school next month to be a Dental Hygenist. Both her parents are in heaven but i know they are looking down & smiling.

Some local businesses are wishing you a Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year.

Backing up a little bit to Christmas eve, I put a $20 bill in the hand of a fella who has helped me load heavy bags of dog food into my van many many times, I never had to ask him for help, he just always seemed to be there when I needed it.   He said  ” ma’am ” you don’t have to do that. I told him “I know…Merry Christmas”  This holiday season is about giving not receiving & it made me feel good inside to have put a smile on his face.

Now speaking of dog food, you kinow our shelter “Best Friends Humane Society” always needs dog food so if you are in the giving mood……..call & ask them what they need, maybe you should visit and find your new family member for 2018.

If anyone has a holiday story you would like to share please send them to news@worthit2u.net and we will gladly post them for you. In the meantime we hope you enjoy the December News Letter for BFHS in Worth County.

2018 – Look In The Mirror

By Dr. Glenn Mollette
How did 2017 go for you? Was it a good year or a not so good year? Regardless of what happened you can’t change 2017. The year is behind us and 2018 is ahead of us.
What can you do to make 2018 a great year?
Make a list of what you want to accomplish in the year ahead. Don’t make it so long that it’s overwhelming. Most people’s list can go on and on and then it becomes a daunting task.
Here are some ideas for you.
Focus on your health. You can do almost anything if you have your health. Go to your doctor for a physical. Have blood work done. Find our what your numbers are then adjust accordingly. If your cholesterol is high or your sugar level is high you will need to exercise a little more and eat a better diet with more fruit and vegetables and less red meat. Eating less sugar will probably be a good thing for you in 2018 as most Americans eat too much sugar. I had my blood work done about four days after Thanksgiving. Everything came back good except my sugar level was 106, which is a little high. It needs to in the nineties. However, I ate at least four pieces of pie over the Thanksgiving holiday. When you go to have your blood work done don’t go right after a blowout-eating holiday.
Remember if you have your health you feel like doing something. You can work hard, sell pencils, work retail, work your garden, mow your grass and enjoy life. A lot of sick people have money but they can’t enjoy their money because they threw away their health.  Things still happen. Our bodies are flesh and blood and you can lose your health even being a fitness nut. However, your chances are better if you at least try.  Keep walking, keep moving your body, be active.
My father was actually very unhealthy in his eating habits. He was overweight and ate any and everything. He wasn’t big on desserts but was big on anything fried, red meat and lots of squirrels and rabbits. He was a hunter. He made it to 85 and one of the reasons I believe he did was become he kept moving. He was out in the hills about three days before he died and shot a rabbit from his truck to eat for dinner.
Find ways to keep moving and things to keep your interest. Winter months are tougher for most Americans so be creative in your efforts to keep body and mind active.
Make and Save Money. You can’t take money with you but you can enjoy it here and then leave some for your family. America’s economy is coming back. There are more jobs now than we have seen in awhile. Some corporations who moved their work to other countries will bring some of their jobs back to America. Any jobs they bring back will be more than we have had the last sixteen or so years. There is work to be done in America. You might have to drive or move to another town but there is money to be made if you are willing to work. Even if you have to work two jobs you can earn a paycheck in America. Every time you get a paycheck put some money aside in your bank. Eventually buy some stock in a mutual fund or preferably an index fund. Unless you have a crisis in your life leave your saved money alone and keep adding to it. Eventually you will have enough for hard times and good times. Even if you can only save $20 a paycheck this is better than nothing and even a small amount will add up.
Pursue one or two interests in 2018.  Fourteen months ago I started taking violin or I should say fiddle lessons. I enjoy it.  It’s something to do. I write these columns. It’s something to do. I like to travel. It’s something to do. I hope to write a book in 2018. It’s something to do. I try to do only what I enjoy but that’s not easy because not everything is enjoyable. There are some parts of life that are tedious, trying and just a pain. This is why you need to pursue a personal interest or two. Do something you want to do.
Of course there is always more. You have a closet or a garage you need to clean out. You have chores and more chores to get done and most everybody does.
Find time for God in 2018. Most Americans believe in God but spend very little time in spiritual pursuits. When all your friends have walked away and even your family and other loved ones are no longer there for you there is a friend who sticks closer than all others.
There is only one person who can make 2018 a great year for you. Go look in the mirror and look this person over.

Worth County Health Department awarded Car Seat Mini Grant

Worth County Health Department was awarded the 2018 Car Seat Mini Grant by the Georgia Department of Public Health, Injury Prevention Program. Through the Mini Grant, it provides car seats and education to financially eligible families in Worth County. This program is funded by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to help ensure Georgia’s children are safe while riding in motor vehicles.

Since 2007, the education, car seats and booster seats provided through the Mini Grant prevented serious injury or death and saved 344 of Georgia’s children who were involved in crashes.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, car seats reduce fatal injuries by 71 percent among infants and by 54 percent among children ages one to four years in passenger cars.

“Car seats offer the best protection for children in the event of a crash, and they are most effective when installed and used correctly,” said Worth County Health Department Nurse Manager Gina Connell. Nearly three out of every four car seats are not used properly, placing children at unnecessary risk, she said.

“It’s our responsibility to keep our children safe,” Connell said. “The Car Seat Mini Grant is a great opportunity to help our community and help protect our children from serious injuries or death in motor vehicle crashes.”

She said the program helps families get their children buckled up right, every trip, every time.

THIS ARTICLE HAS BEEN EDITED..

Good Morning Worth County, This news article s sponsored by TIFTON TERMITE of Sylvester…They would like to tell everyone a Very Happy New Year.

Well another cold day is upon us, bundle up before heading out!! Brr…Our schools were scheduled open today and last night on out FB page there were some concerns about heat. I personally think  all heating systems at home, work & school are a little stressed right now as this is out of the norm for us in these local areas.

Sometimes we just need to use common sense though, the school system would not open the doors if they could not adequately keep our children warm enough…(my opinion) Its is my hope  if the heating systems went down we would be notified and kids would come home.

THIS ARTICLE HAS BEEN UPDATED SINCE A CONVERSATION WITH OUR SUSPENDED SHERIFF JEFF HOBBY…Hobby said “this has no reflection on him, he was suspended”

Personally what interested me the most was finding out that comments should not be deleted from their page and why…i’m sure many others also.

The ACLU acknowledges in their letter they are aware of the suspension of Sheriff Hobby.

So moving on to other news, back before Christmas we received some information and wanted to understand it somemore before sharing with the public.

Before posting of this article our office did speak with our current Sheriff, Bobby Sapp.  Sheriff Sapp was aware of the letter and told us he had turned it over the the County Attorney. Sapp also said the person who handles posting to the FB page has been informed not to remove/edit. The departments fb page currently looks good, lots of informative posts!!

 Hurting Our Young Americans’ Futures

_____________________________________

By Dr. Glenn Mollette
Millions of Americans in states like California, Illinois and Kentucky are already in peril because of the horrendous government mismanagement of teacher’s and state worker’s retirement money.
Americans are in further peril because we will face severe hardship in this country if the long-term path of our Social Security program continues. Our government leaders must take steps to resolve the road Social Security is on. We must pay back what has been borrowed from the fund and stop buying trillions of dollars in Treasury securities that we cannot pay back to ourselves.
We are the biggest owners of our National Debt.
America owes 20 trillion dollars.
Our Social Security Trust Fund or our retirement money owns a big chunk of the national debt.
Our U.S. Treasury manages the U.S. debt through its Bureau of Public Debt.  The debt falls into two categories: Debt Held by the Public and Intra-governmental holdings.  The Intra-governmental is the portion of the federal debt owed to 230 other federal agencies. It totals about 5.6 trillion dollars. Why would the government owe money to itself? Some agencies like the Social Security Trust Fund, take in more revenue from taxes than they want to set aside and invest.  Rather than saving the money, these agencies buy U.S. Treasurys with it. They do this because our federal government is so strapped for cash for the general fund. Someone will say our country is investing our Social Security money. It’s not an investment to loan money to someone who already owes 20 Trillion dollars.
By owning Treasurys, they transfer their excess cash to the general fund, where it is spent. One day they will redeem their treasury notes for cash – it is hoped.  The federal government at that time will either need to raise taxes or issue more debt to give the agencies the money they will need and the agency will be desperate for it because it owns Treasurys. It’s sort of like robbing Peter to pay Paul. The day will come when the financial crisis is so great that it will be very difficult to raise the payroll tax more and more to cover the demand to pay retirees.
Which agencies own the most treasurys? Social Security.
–       Social Security Trust Fund and Federal Disability Insurance Trust Fund $2.8 Trillion
–       Office of Personnel Management Retirement – $888 Billion
–       Military Retirement Fund – $670 Billion
–       Medicare – $294 Billion
–       Cash on hand to fund federal government operations $580 Billion
Here are the holders of public debt as of December 2016.
  – Foreign   $6.004 Trillion
  – Federal Reserve $2.465 Trillion
  – Mutual Funds  $1.671 Trillion
   – State and local government including their pension funds  $553 Billion
   – Banks  $663 Billion
    – Insurance Companies $347 Billion
    – U.S. Savings Bonds   $166 Billion
    – Other  (brokers, bank personal trusts, individuals, government sponsored
enterprises, corporate and non-corporate investors and other enterprises
              $1.662 Trillion
If you add up the debt held by Social Security and all the retirement and pension funds nearly half of the U.S. Treasury debt is held in trust for your retirement.
If the United States defaults on it’s debt, China, Japan and Ireland would be very upset, but current and future American retirees would be hurt the most.
In October 2017 China owned 1.2 trillion dollars of U.S. debt. Japan owned 1.1 trillion. Ireland is third holding $312 billion. Brazil holds $270 billion.  The Cayman Islands owns $269 billion.  Luxembourg is $218 billion and Belgium $116 billion.  Switzerland, The UK, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia and India hold between $141 billion and $254 billion. (Sources: Treasury Bulletin, Monthly Treasury Statement, and Table 6. Schedule D Investments of Federal Government Accounts in Federal Securities, U.S. Department of the Treasury, December 2016. “Treasury Bulletin, Table OFS-2 Ownership of Federal Securities” U.S. Department of the Treasury, December 2016.)
The numbers are always changing of course when it comes to our national debt. The numbers above don’t add up to exactly what our current debt is because the numbers are always changing.
We have to reduce the size of government.
We must reduce spending money we do not have.
We must stop spending trillions of dollars on Iraq, Afghanistan and other foreign countries.
Reducing our financial support of the United Nations is a good move. Reducing our financial support to other countries is imperative. Especially the countries who now for years have burned our flag and demonstrated hate toward America.
We have to get our own house in order.
At the current trend a lot of our young Americans are going to be very hurt down the road.

2018 Tax Season begins Monday Jan 29th.

THIS PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT IS SPONSORED  BY “TIFTON TERMITE” OF SYLVESTER wishing all their customers a Happy New Year!

Enjoy this blast of sunshine while it last Worth County…

The Internal Revenue Service announced that the nation’s tax season will begin Monday, Jan. 29, 2018 and reminds taxpayers claiming certain tax credits that refunds won’t be available before late February.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on Jan. 29, with nearly 155 million individual tax returns expected to be filed in 2018. The nation’s tax deadline will be April 17 this year – so taxpayers will have two additional days to file beyond April 15.

Many software companies and tax professionals will be accepting tax returns before Jan. 29 and then will submit the returns when IRS systems open. Although the IRS will begin accepting both electronic and paper tax returns Jan. 29, paper returns will begin processing later in mid-February as system updates continue. The IRS strongly encourages people to file their tax returns electronically for faster refunds.

The IRS set the Jan. 29 opening date to ensure the security and readiness of key tax processing systems in advance of the opening and to assess the potential impact of tax legislation on 2017 tax returns.

The IRS reminds taxpayers that, by law, the IRS cannot issue refunds claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) before mid-February. While the IRS will process those returns when received, it cannot issue related refunds before mid-February.The IRS expects the earliest EITC/ACTC related refunds to be available in taxpayer bank accounts or on debit cards starting on Feb. 27, 2018, if they chose direct deposit and there are no other issues with the tax return.

The IRS also reminds taxpayers that they should keep copies of their prior-year tax returns for at least three years. Taxpayers who are using a tax software product for the first time will need their adjusted gross income from their 2016 tax return to file electronically. Taxpayers who are using the same tax software they used last year will not need to enter prior-year information to electronically sign their 2017 tax return. Using an electronic filing PIN is no longer an option.

The filing deadline to submit 2017 tax returns is Tuesday, April 17, 2018, rather than the traditional April 15 date. In 2018, April 15 falls on a Sunday, and this would usually move the filing deadline to the following Monday – April 16. However, Emancipation Day – a legal holiday in the District of Columbia – will be observed on that Monday, which pushes the nation’s filing deadline to Tuesday, April 17, 2017. Under the tax law, legal holidays in the District of Columbia affect the filing deadline across the nation.

Taxpayers can visit www.IRS.gov/GetReady for more tips on preparing to file their 2017 tax return.

Please share this information.

Phoebe Worth Sets Visitation Guidelines During Flu Season

Sylvester, Ga. – During flu season, Phoebe is taking added precautions to protect its patients, families, staff members and community from unnecessary exposure to influenza.

Starting today, the following temporary visitation guidelines will be implemented:

  • Patient visitation should be limited to care and support of the patient.
  • Children under the age of 18 should not visit the hospital.
  • Do not visit if you have any signs or symptoms of influenza.
  • If you have a fever, cough, body aches, or a sore throat, please postpone your visit until you have been symptom-free for 24 hours.
  • Anyone coming into the hospital with flu and cold symptoms will be required to wear a mask.
  • Visitors will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as gown, gloves, and a mask if visiting a patient in isolation.

Signage regarding these temporary guidelines as well as prevention reminders – such as cover your cough and clean your hands – will be posted at the main entrance of the hospital.

As we work to provide a safe environment for our patients and staff, we apologize for any inconvenience these visitation guidelines may cause. Phoebe will continue to monitor conditions and remove the restrictions as soon as it is safe to do so.

Phoebe encourages everyone over the age of six months to receive the flu vaccine to protect themselves and others from influenza. Vaccines are available by visiting your primary care physician, the health department or at most drug stores. If you are in need of a primary care physician, Phoebe Primary Care offices are located across the region. Visit choosephoebe.com to find a physician near you.

OPIOID issues in South Georgia is becoming a daily topic with doctors & medical facilities, new restrictions, new laws and even more to come.

My personal experience….

Since 2015 I myself have taken many pain meds, 3 hip surgeries and a bad back keep me in pain. The issue that I personally have with the new restrictions is the fact that you have to take a drug test and the meds have to be in your system. I understand they want to make sure you are not selling your meds on the streets to people who are addicted to them, but couldn’t being forced to take them on days that you are not in pain actually lead to addiction. I went about 5 days (a couple of months ago) no pain, it felt so good, I did not take any pain medication. At my appointment I was given a cup and asked for a urine sample. I was later told my sample was negative for Opoids, I explained to my doctor about the few days prior to the appoinment of not taking them due to not being in pain, that was a short lived experience and my pain was back but the doctor was hesitant to give me meds. I was told they have to be in your system.  Is the current system part of the problem? We don’t take Aleve or something similar for a headache we do not have!! The other issue I found aggravating was only being allowed to pick up a few pills at a time, having to make several trips a month to the pharmacy when you are disabled and in pain.

I am fully aware Opioids is a serious issue, I have no clue what the solution is,……do you?

The above paragraph is my personal experience & opinion, I would love to hear what other people think about this…below are some highlights from the recent Phoebe Board Meeting where several items are discussed including the Opioid issue, as well as a presentation from Dr. Eddie Black that I found very educating and definately worth sharing with our community and surrounding areas. It’s good to know that our doctors are looking for solutions to this new plague that is devasting to so many.

PHOEBE BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

JANUARY 10, 2018

Critical Care Recognition — The Critical Care team was recognized for their service, commitment and compassionate care.  Chairman John Culbreath read a letter of commendation written by the family of a recent patient.  Phoebe has implemented a high intensity model in our Intensive Care Units.  This model provides 24/7 physician coverage by highly-trained intensivists for our critically ill patients to ensure they receive the highest level of care.  Dr. Enrique Lopez, Phoebe Critical Care Intensivist, said, “Every single national metric that any of the top university-based units are measured on, we meet or exceed.”  Outgoing Interim Critical Care Director Rochelle Tinman said, “The progression of that model [over the last year] is absolutely perfect.”

MLK Day of Service — Joe Austin highlighted Phoebe’s plans for the MLK Day of Service.  We will be providing free flu shots and blood pressure checks during lunch at the Albany Rescue Mission and during dinner at the Albany Salvation Army.  Phoebe volunteers will also serve dinner at the Salvation Army and will join the Retired Senior Volunteer Program ramp builders to construct wheelchair ramps at the homes of two citizens with disabilities.  Employees are also making donations to the Albany Civil Rights Institute to help underwrite their monthly community nights, and our Diabetes Resource Center team will provide the program for the January community night.  Phoebe will host an MLK Day ceremony at 3:00 p.m. Monday in the cafeteria solarium.

Opioid Crisis — Dr. Eddie Black presented information on the opioid crisis, new state laws related to the crisis and the prescribing of opioids, and how Phoebe is responding.  All providers with DEA registration can now enroll in a state Prescription Drug Monitoring Database (PDMP) and will be required to register by July, 2018.  It allows prescribers and dispensers to easily check a patient’s background and prescription history before prescribing and providing opioid medication.  Dr. Black said, “[This program] is starting to work, and it will become even more effective when it becomes mandatory.”  The new laws limit the number of opioid pills that can be prescribed at one time.  Dr. Black said, “Our [Phoebe’s] policy was put together before the state law was written, and some of what we’re doing is more stringent than what is required by state law.”

Medicare/Medicaid — Joel Wernick expressed concern over proposed changes to the Medicare 340B program which currently allows Phoebe to get certain prescription medications at the lowest possible cost because of the disproportionately large share of low-income patients we serve.  The proposed change could cost Phoebe at least $4M per year.  Recently, a judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by the American Hospital Association aimed at stopping the cuts.  Wernick also said interest in expanding Medicaid seems to be growing at the state capitol, but he does not expect action on that issue until a new governor takes office next year.

Honoring Martin Luther King Jr.

Honoring Martin Luther King,

Only three people have a US national holiday observed in their honor: Christopher Columbus, George Washington, and the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated on the third Monday in January each year (near his Jan. 15 birthday) to honor his legacy in battling for civil rights. The fight to create a national holiday was a massive struggle, one that required the same commitment as the movement to guarantee the rights of all Americans: community organizing, long-term determination, and relentless persistence.

King was assassinated in 1968. The legislation designating the federal holiday in his honor wasn’t passed for another 15 years, and the day wasn’t officially commemorated until 1986. And even as King’s work continues to inspire generations of leaders, the fight for universal recognition of the holiday in the US still isn’t over.

A struggle from day one

The call for a national holiday began shortly after he was shot on April 4, 1968—congressman John Conyers, a Michigan Democrat, introduced legislation just four days later. Congress took no action.

Conyers then was one of the few black members of Congress. (He would serve for more than 50 years, resigning in December following sexual-harassment accusations.) Conyers was a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC). When the legislation stalled, he persisted, introducing the same bill every year until its passage 15 years later, gathering more co-sponsors along the way.

The only African-American senator at the time, Massachusetts Republican Edward Brooke, also introduced legislation in 1968 to authorize the president to proclaim Jan. 15 a day of “public commemoration” in honor of King, His bill didn’t go as far as to designate it as a legal holiday.

The congressional caucus played a pivotal role in gathering public support, advocating for the holiday around the country with debates, demonstrations, and petition drives. In 1971, the Southern Christian Leadership Congress (SCLC) presented Congress with a petition in support of the King holiday bearing over three million signatures. Still, Congress took no action.

The birthday song and the big push

By the late 1970s, calls for a national holiday were mounting. The CBC had collected over six million signatures, and president Jimmy Carter endorsed the holiday bill.

Coretta Scott King, King’s widow, launched a national campaign to gather more public support ahead of the 15-year anniversary of his death, delivering multiple speeches to Congress and holding rallies across the country.

Stevie Wonder regularly performed at the rallies, telling an Atlanta crowd in 1979, “If we cannot celebrate a man who died for love, then how can we say we believe in it? It is up to me and you”

Wonder released his new song “Happy Birthday” to celebrate the life of King on his 1980 album Hotter than July. The record’s sleeve featured a photograph of King with a message imploring fans to support the holiday bill: “We still have a long road to travel until we reach the world that was his dream. We in the United States must not forget either his supreme sacrifice or that dream.”

Later that year, Wonder called Coretta Scott King and told her, “I had a dream about this song. And I imagined in this dream I was doing this song. We were marching—with petition signs to make for Dr. King’s birthday to become a national holiday.” She wasn’t optimistic: “I wish you luck. You know, we’re in a time where I don’t think it’s going to happen.”

But the song was a hit, and public support for the holiday reached a fever pitch.

At last

In 1983, civil rights leaders gathered in Washington, DC to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the March on Washington and King’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech, as well as the 15th anniversary of his death.

AP/Ed Reinke
Civil-rights leaders, including Coretta Scott King and Martin Luther King III, in Washington for the ’20th anniversary of the voting-rights march.

Following the anniversary, legislation was once again introduced in Congress, but this time it was different.

When senator Jesse Helms, the South Carolina Republican, tried to add FBI smear material on King (the agency spent years trying to discredit him as a communist and threat to US national security) to the congressional record, his New York Democratic colleague Daniel Patrick Moynihan threw the pages on the floor, calling them”filth” and ”obscenities,” and left in disgust.

The next day, the bill passed easily, and president Ronald Regan signed it into law on Nov. 2, 1983.

The fight continues

The first federal holiday wasn’t celebrated until 1986. In 2000, 32 years after King’s death, South Carolina became the last state in the Union to formally recognize MLK as an official holiday.

The first Martin Luther King Jr. Day was marked with marches, church services, candlelight vigils, and concerts across the country. Hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Atlanta, King’s hometown, where Coretta Scott King awarded South African bishop Desmond Tutu the King Peace Prize for his work against apartheid.

Not all Americans took part in the celebration. In Buffalo, NY, a sculpture of King was whitewashed. Southern states immediately introduced legislation that combined MLK Day with state holidays to honor Confederate general Robert E. Lee.

Even today, Martin Luther King Jr. Day faces resistance. States like Mississippi, Alabama, and Arkansas continue to combine Confederate commemorations with those for King; Lexington, Virginia honors Confederate general Stonewall Jackson with a parade the weekend before MLK Day.

The fight for recognition of Martin Luther King Day continues, just as does the struggle for the very same ideals King championed.

The Sylvester – Worth County Chamber of Commerce will be CLOSED on Monday, January 15, 2018, in honor of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday.
We will resume normal business hours on Tuesday, Jan. 16 from 8:30 until 5:30 pm

Norovirus, or “stomach flu,” now circulating in Southwest Georgia

ALBANY— Along with widespread flu activity in Southwest Georgia, there is also another bug circulating—norovirus, also known as the “stomach flu.”

“We are getting reports of it in places like childcare facilities,” said Southwest Health District Health Director Dr. Charles Ruis. Unlike seasonal influenza, there is no vaccine to prevent norovirus.

However, the body’s immune system usually destroys the virus within a week or so, he said.

“Norovirus-like illness causes about 20 million gastroenteritis cases each year in the United States,” Ruis said. “This is the time of the year we often see it.”

Norovirus illness is not related to seasonal influenza, which is a respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus.

“There is no vaccine to prevent norovirus infection,” Ruis cautioned.  “Antibiotics will not help if you have norovirus illness. This is because antibiotics fight against bacteria, not viruses.” The best way to reduce your chance of getting norovirus is by following some simple tips:

  • Avoid people who are sick if possible, even though it is the holiday season. Consider using video-chatting apps rather than spending time with people who are ill.
  • Wash your hands carefully with soap and water, especially after using the bathroom or changing diapers. If soap and water aren’t available, use alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Carefully wash fruits and vegetables, and cook oysters and other shellfish thoroughly before eating them.
  • People with norovirus illness should not prepare food for others while they have symptoms and for 3 days after they recover from their illness.
  • After throwing up or having diarrhea, immediately clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces by using a bleach-based household cleaner as directed on the product label. If no such cleaning product is available, you can use a solution made with 5 tablespoons to 1.5 cups of household bleach per 1 gallon of water.
  • Immediately remove and wash clothing or linens that may be contaminated with vomit or stool. Handle soiled items carefully—disturbing them as little as possible—to avoid spreading the virus. If available, wear rubber or disposable gloves while handling soiled clothing or linens and wash your hands after handling. The items should be washed with detergent at the maximum available cycle length and then machine dried.
  • People who have been sick should remain home for two to three days after symptoms have stopped before returning to school or work to avoid spreading the infection.

“Most people get better in one to two days,” Ruis said. “Norovirus illness is not life-threatening. But it can be serious, particularly in young children, the elderly and people with other health conditions. It can lead to severe dehydration, hospitalization and even death.”

Symptoms of norovirus infection usually include diarrhea, throwing up, nausea and stomach cramping. Less common symptoms may include low-grade fever, chills, headache, muscle aches and general sense of fatigue.

Reverend Dr. John Daniel “Dr. Dan” Williamson, 75, of Sylvester Georgia passed away on December 21, 2017 surrounded by loved ones.
The Memorial Service will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, December 30th, 2017 at Pinson Memorial United Methodist Church in Sylvester. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until the Service Hour at Pinson Memorial United Methodist Church.
Dr. Dan was born in West Point, Georgia to Daniel Alan (Mr. Pete) and Ethel (Anderson) Williamson on October 15, 1942. He was called to preach in high school where he preached in the Baptist churches around West Point Georgia as he sought to follow God’s call. He met his first wife in college, married, adopted her two children, and began working toward his goal of serving God. They had two children together. When his children were very young, Dan met a United Methodist pastor who led him into the seminary at Emory University and into the United Methodist Church pastorate. He earned a Masters in Theology and a Masters in Education. He served churches in and around Carroll and Haralson Counties in the north Georgia conference, as well as working with the management team at a manufacturing plant and teaching school. After his first wife died, he met and married Brinda. The bishop sent them to the South Georgia conference. In the late 1980s he earned a PhD in Theology from Drew University. He served from 1985 until his death in the South Georgia conference at many churches including Lumber City, Mt. Vernon, Ailey, Blackshear, Folkston, Pinson Memorial and Adel. He retired in 2008 and served at Doerun-Funston, Chula-Harding, and finally Pine Level United Methodist Church in Fitzgerald, Georgia. He always said God had not called him to his final appointment yet. Dr. Dan cherished life and after suffering kidney failure in 1996, he was blessed with a transplant in 2001. He prayed every day for the family who gave him the gift of life after 2001. Dr. Dan grew up on the banks of the Chattahoochee River and loved the outdoors. He and Brinda traveled on motorcycle trips extensively. He was involved in the Christian Motorcycle Association for many years and helped lead people to Christ through his example. He was also involved in the Kiwanis club and the NRA. He loved camping, hunting and fishing. He loved sharing these activities with his wife and family and during his last days was talking about going on an unplanned adventure trip with his family. Dr. Dan was a gentle, loving man who exemplified his beliefs, often giving away his last dollar to someone with a sad story. He leaves a big hole in our hearts that will never be filled but we have joy knowing he is well again.

Chaplain LTC Delton Collins, US Army (Ret.), 87, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2017, at The Green House at Calvary in Columbus, Ga. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 27, 2017, at Banks Funeral Home in Sylvester, Ga., with interment to follow in the Hillcrest Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the service hour at Banks Funeral Home. Dr. Don Wilhite and Army Chaplain Wyne Hutchings will officiate.
Delton was born Jan. 15, 1930, in Ashburn, Ga., and was a proud member of the Rakkasans, Company E, 187th Airborne Infantry Regiment. He was severely wounded in action during the March 23, 1951, Munsan-ni combat jump and would eventually document that experience in his 2004 autobiography, “Nights and Days of Hell.”
His book went through several printings, and he took great joy in the hundreds of letters he received from Korean War veterans across the country, who thanked him for finally telling their story.
Delton was honored with a Korean Service Medal with the Silver Service Star and two Bronze Service Stars; the Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Service Stars; the Purple Heart; Parachutist-Glider Badge with Bronze Star; Meritorious Service Medal, and many other commendations.

In 1952, he married his sweetheart, Nellie Wildolph Lewis, and theirs was a relationship full of love and laughter for almost 64 years, until her death in 2016.
After the Korean War, he graduated from Mercer University and then received his Master of Divinity degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He rejoined the Army as a Chaplain and volunteered to serve in the Vietnam War.
Returning from Vietnam, Delton received his Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy from Long Island University and became a practicing member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. He served as a Chaplain and therapist until his retirement from the Army in 1981.
But his heart was never far from the Army. He soon went back to work as a counselor at Fort Benning’s Kelley Hill Education Center, devoting himself to helping soldiers further their education.
Delton was a loving father to his three girls, Debbie, Julie and Jenn, and he never stopped cheering on their careers and education. His practical jokes were the stuff of infamy, and he taught them how to live every day to the fullest and to maintain grace under pressure.
After his second retirement in 1994, Delton and Nellie travelled the United States in their camper and flew to their favorite place, Honolulu, Hawai’i, almost every year until 2006. At the age of 76, he capped their last visit to the island with a parasailing adventure, wanting to soar under a parachute one more time “before he got old” — a fitting symbol of his outlook on life.
Survivors include his daughters, Debbie Pate (Daryl) of Lake Park, Ga., Julie Collins of Columbus, Ga., and Jenn Collins (Brad Barnes) of Columbus, Ga.; brothers, Oran Collins of Mt. Juliet, Tenn. and Almon Collins of St. Stephen, S.C.; sister, Annise Harwell of Covington, La.; grandchildren, John Pate (Alicia), Jason Pate (Misty) and Elizabeth Pate; 4 great grandchildren, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Delton was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie; son, Delton Michael; parents, Dorsey and Rosa Collins; sisters, Zelma Ellerbee and Edith Hardage; and brothers, Dorsey Maloy Collins and Marvin Kenneth Collins.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his memory to The Green House at Calvary (7490 Old Moon Road, Columbus, Ga., 31909) or to the Wounded Warrior Project.

W. Collier, Sr. on October 5, 1947 and the union was blessed with seven children.     Leola, affectionately called “Tutt” and “Cuda”, exhibited her profound Christian life with all who she met and those who she had a relationship.  She enjoyed caring for her children and any other persons that were in her presence.  She was a testimony of the life that Christ expects from whoever believes.  She would always adopt her children’s friends, and share her loving care to all that crossed her path.      Leola loved all of God’s creations and displayed her love by feeding stray cats, dogs, and even birds that found their way to her yard.  She had a fondness for taking care of the yards until she was unable to do so; even then she maintained her ability to nurture her garden including her various pepper plants.  Her favorite pastime was working puzzles and going to yard sales.  Once she teamed up with Mamie Cushion and Alice Floyd, they were known as the “Golden Girls” and off they would go!      Leola was predeceased by her parents, two sisters-Irene Dantley and Gloria Jean Hobbs; two brothers-William Hobbs and George Hobbs; and one grandson-Rodrigus Bartell.  Leola is survived by one sister, Emma Roberson; seven children-Betty Robison of Ashburn, GA, J. W. Collier, Jr., Ernestine Hendrix, Linda Collier, Jacqueline Collier, all of Titusville, FL, David Collier of Orlando, FL, and Vivian Collier-Lewis of Titusville, FL; three sons-in-law, David Robison of Ashburn, GA, Ronald Hendrix and Clifton Lewis, both of Titusville, FL; seventeen grandchildren, Tommie Faye Bateman-Graves, Shandra Oldham, Lisa Battle, Angela Fullmore, Derek Collier, Christopher Chatfield, Jarrod Collier, Myoshe Johnson, Akila Collier, Kimberly Collier-Unukpo, Ashley Chatfield, Corey Hendrix, Brandon Collier, David “Charles” Collier, Tiffany Pearson, Courtney Collier, Brittany Pearson; eighteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.  She had a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.  She also treasured a host of special friends and neighbors who looked in on her and assisted her in her times of need.        Family and friends were deeply saddened at her passing, but we will press on with the memories of her goodness, her kindness, and will strive to live up to the example she set.  We will all miss her, but we are thankful that we know her and enjoyed her obvious grace and love while she was among us.  The family desire that rather than mourn, instead celebrate her homegoing.  We are assured that she is now at peace as she and we await Christ’s coming again on that great day.   We will all then see her again.

MrsLottie Naomi Salter Houston, 90, of Sylvester died Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at PruittHealth-Sylvester.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 7, 2017 at First Baptist Church with interment to follow in the Hillcrest Cemetery. The Rev. Donnie Duncan will officiate.
MrsHouston was born on January 20, 1927 in Habana, Cuba to the late Rufus and Lou Ann Taylor Salter. She retired from Federal Civil Service having worked at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah; Army Customs Office in New Orleans; Fort Benning, GA; Fort McNair; the Pentagon and the Navy Annex in Washington, DC before finishing her career at the Marine Corps Logistics  Base in Albany. While raising her children, MrsHouston worked at Coats and Clark in Albany. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Sylvester.
MrsHouston was widowed at the age of 28, single handedly raised five children (four boys and a girl), and was able to put all of them through college. She had a sense of humor, gave boundless love to all, and was seated in good common sense. She was asked once how she raised five children alone to which she replied, “Well, I just started raising them, and the only thing I ever got from crying was a runny nose”. She didn’t dwell on the past. She lived in the present and the future.
Her home was a happy home where all the neighborhood children hung out to play. Her discipline technique was much different from discipline techniques today. When she got home from work, she put up her pocket book and picked up her paddle. All the boys told on each other, including the neighborhood boys, so normally everybody got a whipping. Her technique worked because she was loved by all the children in the neighborhood. After retirement, MrsHouston finally had time for her hobbies. She loved flowers, cooking, playing tennis, visiting friends, traveling in Europe and Israel. She took many cruises, did volunteer work at a cleft lip clinic, and gave support to the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, India. She loved the stock market and when asked why she picked her own stock instead of using a broker, she said, “I can guess as good as them”. MrsHouston readily accepted change and new technology and never lost her optimism of life.
Survivors include her daughter, Joyce Ann Shiver (Ray) of Leesburg; son, Mike Houston of Sylvester; grandsons, Billy Mitchell Houston(Becky) of Atlanta, Jason Shiver (Tabitha) of Atlanta, and Alex Harrod (Susan) of Atlanta; granddaughter, Erika Crook (Rob) of Atlanta; three great granddaughters; five great grandsons; brother, Bennie Salter of Sylvester; and sister, Dina Hudson of Sylvester.
In addition to her parents, MrsHouston was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Rose Houston; sons, Tommy Rose Houston, Arthur Johnny Houston, and Billy Mitchell Houston; and a great-grandson, Will Houston.

What President Trump Must Do

By Dr. Glenn Mollette
President Trump and Congress must end the pharmaceutical robbing of America. Every day Pfizer, Johnson and Johnson, Roche, Novartis, Merck, Sanofi and others are driving America’s indebtedness toward another trillion dollars in drug money debt.
Americans obviously need drugs. I’m talking about the legal kind. These are the medicines, pills, injections, drips and liquids dispensed to you at your local drug store such as CVS, Walgreens, Walmart and your small town independent pharmacist. Of course there are the mega number of drugs that you may receive if admitted to the hospital. Those are never reasonable.
President George W. Bush trying everything under the sun to be reelected in 2003 set up a deal with Congress to enact Medicare part D that covers the cost of prescriptions – Medicare Modernization Act.  The federal government was barred from negotiating cheaper prices for such medicines.  Why would the government actually pass a law saying that you can’t negotiate drug prices? Simple answer – The drug company lobbyists have funneled about 2 billion dollars into the nation’s capital since the beginning of 2003. In just 2015 and 2016 alone drug companies spent the equivalent of over $500,000 per member of congress. Congressmen and Congresswomen care most about being reelected.
A paper released by Harvard Medical School researchers cited the size of Medicare part D program and its lack of government negotiating clout as among the reasons why Americans pay the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs. A co-author of that paper, Ameet Sarpatwari, estimates that Part D accounts for nearly 30 percent of the nation’s spending on prescription drugs.
Unbelievable as well, Part D pays far more for drugs than do Medicaid or the Veterans Health Administration. Both of these mandate government measures to hold down prices. Reports cite Medicare Part D pays between 70 – 80 percent more than Medicaid and VHA. Why has this continued? Rep. John Boehner of Ohio, who recently retired, received over $1,303.157 between 2003 and 2016 to his election committee and leadership PAC. Sen. Orin Hatch of Utah has received over $1,182.560.  Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, $995,350. Rep. James E. Clyburn of South Carolina, $834,508 and Rep. Frank Pallone Jr. of New Jersey $731,078.  This is only a few of them who have rolled in the drug cash.
Sixty-five year old Americans and up can elect to have D which is a no brainer if you need prescriptions which most senior Americans need. The average cost of Medicare D prescription drug coverage in 2016 was $41.46 per month. To senior adults on fixed incomes any additional expense is an expense. However, the cost of Medicare D is cheap in comparison to what a trip to the drug store can cost. A hospital stay requiring an expensive treatment can push a medical bill up by thousands. In this day and time it only takes a couple of nights in the hospital to rack up a $25,000 hospital bill or much more.
Here is the problem, Medicare D allows the Pharmaceutical companies to submit whatever bill they want to Medicare and Medicare is obligated to pay for it. Anything. Any cost. There is no Board of Supervisors negotiating the cost of the medicine that Medicare pays for. Do you think your $41.46 per month (your cost is probably more now) is actually covering the cost of all of your prescriptions? No it is not, the American taxpayers are being stuck with the bill. Billions and Billions of more debt is being heaped on the American people to cover the real cost of Medicare part D.  From 2003 to 2012 part D added $318 billion dollars to the national debt. A report in the 2013 Medicare Trustees reports projects Medicare Part D will add $852 billion to our debt over the next ten years pushing it over one trillion dollars.
Conservatives Senator Orin Hatch of Utah, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania all voted for this. John Boehner of Ohio, Eric Cantor of Virginia and Paul Ryan of Wisconsin voted for Medicare Part D or the Medicare Modernization Act.
While most Americans on Part D greatly appreciate that our government is eating most of the bill. Americans will be asked to pay more eventually. Our leadership (?) has to fix the problem. Sadly our leadership is being bought so don’t expect them to fix it as long as the cash is pouring into their pockets.
President George W. Bush did achieve his goal through the Medical Modernization Act. According to exit polls he increased his share of the over 65 vote to 52 percent in 2004.
President Trump has a lot to do, but he must lead the way to change how we are doing business with the drug companies and Medicare D.

Studies from the U.S. Small Business Administration and U.S. Chamber of Commerce have found that acquiring new customers can cost as much as five to seven times more than simply retaining existing customers. The fact that customer profitability tends to increase over the life of a retained customer is added incentive for businesses to allocate more resources to sharpening their customer retention strategies. We talk about eight customer retention strategies that give businesses some inspiration and practical examples to help improve their customer retention rates. We address the problems and provide some actionable tips to implement to maximize customer retention.”

DEA announces step to increase opioid addiction treatment

Deregulation enables mid-level practitioners to prescribe and dispense buprenorphine to addicts

The United States Drug Enforcement Administration today announced a deregulatory measure that will make it easier for residents of underserved areas to receive treatment for opioid addiction.

As published today in the Federal Register, nurse practitioners and physician assistants can now become DATA-Waived qualifying practitioners, which give them authority to prescribe and dispense the opioid maintenance drug buprenorphine from their offices. Prior to the enactment of the Drug Abuse Treatment Act of 2000, only physicians could treat opioid addicts and had to register with DEA as both physicians and operators of Narcotic Treatment Programs. Waiving this second registration prompted more physicians to offer treatment services. The Federal Register notice is available here:

Today’s action brings DEA regulations into conformity with the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act passed by Congress and signed into law in 2016. Because the vast majority of DATA-Waived physicians prior to CARA served urban areas, rural parts of the United States were underserved. This action provides more treatment options for addicts in rural parts of the country.

According to a 2017 report published by the National Rural Health Association, 90 percent of DATA-Waived physicians practice in urban counties, leaving 53 percent of rural counties without any prescribing physician and 30 million people living in counties where treatment is unavailable. As a result, rural patients seeking outpatient buprenorphine treatment must often travel long distances to access care. Rural providers of buprenorphine report a demand far beyond their capacity and say they lack the resources to adequately support themselves and patients in treatment. The NRHA report also found that, with 92 percent of substance use treatment facilities located in urban areas, rural areas offer fewer inpatient and day treatment resources.

Currently, there are nearly 43,000 Data-Waived qualifying practitioners in the United States. When CARA was enacted, DEA began the process of transitioning mid-level practitioners into DATA-Waived status in order to treat more addicts, and nearly 5,000 mid-level practitioners are already able to treat and prescribe opioid addicts.

Phoebe Worth Announces Latest DAISY and PRIDE Award Recipients

Sylvester, Ga. – Phoebe Worth recently honored their latest DAISY and PRIDE award recipients. The goal of these awards is to recognize excellence in the workplace by both nurses and non-nursing employees.

Tammy Holloway, RN, works in General Medical and is the most recent DAISY award winner. Tammy was nominated by a fellow Phoebe Family member for her dedication to the general medical team and of her patients. According to the nomination, Tammy, who has been a nurse at Phoebe Worth for almost three years, always has the best attitude and is very easy to work with. “Tammy is always willing to step up and help out when needed. She comes in early, picks up a shift and is always nice to patients and employees,” said the Phoebe Family member.

The recent PRIDE award winner is Amy Kilgore, a data analyst. Amy was nominated by Stacey Flynt, director of Clinic and Business Operations at Phoebe Worth, for her hard work and dedication to the organization. “Amy goes above and beyond on a daily basis- whether getting reports together for our financials, making sure we get electronic payments, working on performance improvement and our newsletter just to name a few!  She is instrumental in making sure we can all do our jobs efficiently and effectively,” said Stacey.

Phoebe PRIDE stands for Person Responding In Dedicated Excellence and recognizes excellence in the workplace by non-nursing employees. The award is presented periodically throughout the year and each winner is recognized at a special ceremony. Patients, family, visitors, employees and volunteers are encouraged to nominate a Phoebe employee when they see a person responding in dedicated excellence.

The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, CA, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes.  Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease.  The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.

At a presentation given in front of the nurse’s colleagues, physicians, patients, and visitors, the honoree will receive a certificate commending her or him for being an “Extraordinary Nurse.”  The honoree will also be given a beautiful and meaningful sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa.
